Message from the Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture
Dear parents and guardians,
The effort to improve our educational system and provide high, quality and competitive education to our young people is a collective goal, but one of the key challenges that must cater for modern societies.
The training itself as a mirror of our society is constantly faced with challenges that must respond. One of the major challenges are information technology and communications, which have grown dramatically in recent years and permeate every aspect of social, economic and cultural activity. Therefore, any new in its general education should acquire basic knowledge and skills in these technologies in order to be able to meet the demands of modern society.
One of the key provisions of the Governance Program of the President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias is to ensure students' access to new technology. Within this framework, the Cabinet has decided to subsidize each student who attends the second grade public high school in Cyprus during the school year 2009-2010 for the purchase of laptop computer. The amount of sponsorship is € 300 and paid guardians of the beneficiary students, based on the guidelines and the buying process attached.
In closing, I would like to stress that the Government and for me personally Education and Culture is a top priority because, in our opinion, are the best investment for the social, economic, spiritual and cultural development and progress of Cyprus.
As Minister of Education and Culture we will make every effort to implement educational reform in order to upgrade our educational system to fully meet the needs of children of European Cyprus in the 21st century.
Andreas Demetriou
Minister for Education and Culture
