Pafos selected as European Capital of Smart Tourism 2023
The EU has announced the two European Capitals of Smart Tourism 2023 for their excellence as tourist destinations in terms of accessibility, sustainability, digitization and cultural heritage and creativity.
Pafos (Cyprus) and Seville (Spain) have been selected as winners of the EU competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2023, following a meeting of the European jury in Brussels on 9 November 2022.
In total, 29 cities from 13 countries competed, of which 7 finalists qualified and were invited to present their nominations before the European Jury. Paphos and Seville impressed the European Jury not only with their remarkable achievements in all four categories of the competition, but also with the outstanding programs of activities they intend to carry out during 2023. They also stood out for their ability to act as standards for other cities.
The two European Smart Tourism Capitals will receive a custom-made sculpture for their city center which will be prominently displayed during their year as European Smart Tourism Capital. In addition, the winning cities will receive advertising support and become part of the growing network of smart tourism cities in Europe. The network facilitates the exchange of knowledge and best practice through a series of workshops and the publication of a best practice guide. The European Smart Tourism Capitals will be part of the post-pandemic recovery of the European tourism industry that includes supporting innovative measures for tourism and are set to become models for digital, accessible, sustainable and creative tourism in Europe and beyond.
The European Capital of Smart Tourism is an EU initiative that aims to promote smart tourism in the EU by rewarding cities for their pioneering approaches to smart tourism in terms of accessibility, digitalisation, sustainability, cultural heritage and creativity. Based on the successful experience of a preparatory action proposed by the European Parliament, the initiative seeks to promote innovative, sustainable and inclusive tourism development, as well as to disseminate and facilitate the exchange of best practices.
